Women on the Move was established seven years ago to provide a group of entrepreneurial unemployed but talented women living in Kurland Village the opportunity to utilize their skills and produce craft items which they could sell to provide a secure living for their families. The group now consists of 11 dedicated women who have over the years improved their skills and the quality of work they produce to a point where they are now receiving large contracts from hotel groups and clothing labels to do work for them. The Women on the Move craft centre includes both a workshop where visitors can come and see the products actually being made and a shop stocked with a wide range of their hand crafted products including fabric painted tablecloths, runners, etc; wattle products; hand bags; placemats; woven mats and more… There are 4 main groups of crafts that the women produce: Wattle weaving - here two of the ladies, Sarah and Sophie focus on weaving a wide range of products out of the bark of the wattle tree. They make baskets, placemats, wattle balls, lampshades, etc. Seamstresses - the 5 seamstresses at women on the move each have quite unique areas of expertise. Veronica specializes in African influenced design placemats, quilted wall-hangings, cushion covers, Madiba style shirts, waist coats and skirts. Urs, Madeleine and Nolleen are well known for their handbags and bead work they do on jackets and T-Shirts as well as their children's and special occasion clothing. Betta specializes in upholstery, curtaining and tracksuits. Weaving - The weavers, Katrina and Charlotte use looms to hand weave gorgeous cotton rugs, bathmats, runners, placemats and bags in different sizes and colours. Fabric painting - Helen, Hester and Charlotte produce a range of beautiful bright hand painted tablecloths, cushions, placemats, runners, etc in a variety of designs.
